Next generation hyperspectral & thermal satellite sensors for high-resolution drought monitoring in Africa.

Algorithm development related to agricultural water management & food security

Within the EOAfrica EXPLORERS project, EOAfrica ARIES (Oct 2022 - Apr 2024) will

  • evaluate the added value of the innovative use of hyperspectral and thermal satellite data for drought monitoring in Africa
  • leverage ECOSTRESS and PRISMA data for developing, implementing and validating new algorithms and EO data products &
  • define recommendations for the design of upcoming Sentinel satellite missions.

7 concrete objectives

  • Undertake consultation with key users and African stakeholders in order to gather requirements for the innovative EO analysis techniques and products
  • Co-Develop experimental, innovative EO analysis techniques utilizing ECOSTRESS and/or PRISMA data
  • Define pilot areas
  • Develop a product validation strategy
  • Implement experimental methods and related products through prototypes
  • Develop a capacity building strategy and materials
  • Policy highlights materials

This EO Africa Explorer ARIES project is a part of the EOAfrica R&D Facility

BUILDING AN ACTIVE RESEARCH COMMUNITY & A CONTINUOUS DEVELOPMENT OF EO CAPABILITIES IN AFRICA

Team

The ARIES consortium consists of 3 research organizations, together building on a 20+ years of experience in analysis of thermal and hyperspectral imagery and developing Copernicus-based products and services:

  • VISTA (Germany)
  • VITO Remote Sensing (Belgium)
  • LIST (Luxembourg)
