OBJECTIVES & APPROACH

The main aim of the project is to leverage ECOSTRESS and PRISMA data for developing, implementing and validating innovative and experimental algorithms and EO data products geared towards solving pressing needs in water resources management and food security in Africa.

To achieve this, we will pursue the following concrete objectives:

  • Undertake consultation with key users and African stakeholders in order to gather requirements for the innovative EO analysis techniques and products.
  • Co-develop experimental, innovative EO analysis techniques utilizing ECOSTRESS and/or PRISMA data for water resources management and food security matters and further adjust these algorithms and products throughout the project following agile development principles.
  • Define pilot areas where the proposed algorithms and data products will be developed and evaluated.
  • Develop a product validation strategy for evaluating the accuracy, quality, and consistency of the innovative EO products.
  • Implement experimental methods and related products through prototype(s) via a freely accessible cloud platform that will guarantee long-term access to the developed methods and algorithms.
  • Develop a capacity building strategy and materials for training the African Early Adopters and EO research groups to ensure operational production and use of the developed algorithms and products after completion of the project.
  • Capture the major findings and their policy relevance of the project to support decision makers within policy highlights materials.

Global project approach

User requirements as captured through a series of interviews with African partners will set the boundary conditions for an iterative algorithm development stage. The developed solution/products will be implemented on the Food Security TEP platform, thereby ensuring long term access to both developed algorithms and products.
Finally, near the end of the project, capacity building is foreseen in the format of written documents and webinars to inform potential end users on the concept, use and potential impacts of the developed products and services.
